Description

BANKSY
Bristol, 1969/1974

Di Faced Tenners, 2004
Colored print on paper, 7,6 x 14,2 cm
10 Pound banknote reproduced by Banksy, identical to the original except for some details.
Printed currency totaling £ 1,000,000.
Published by Pictures on Walls, London

During the Notting Hill Carnival and the Reading Festival in 2004 Banksy throws a suitcase full of 10 notes into the crowd
Counterfeit pounds;
Instead of "Bank of England" reads "Banksy of England" and replaces the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with that of Princess Diana.
The back remains unchanged, except for the writing on the right under Charles Darwin's portrait "Trust No One - don't trust anyone".
"Di-Faced" is a word game from "Defaced-defaced", in reference to the counterfeit nature of the banknote.
It is a denunciation of the relationship between art and value in 21st century society and an act of protest: in fact, although the banknotes they appear clearly counterfeit, people still try to use them.
Ironically, once Banksy's deception is revealed, the value of the Ten Pounds increases.
Torn pieces of the 'Tenners' are used on the certificates of the Pest Control Office as a symbolic seal of authenticity!
A banknote recently joined into the Department of Coins and Medals in British Museum Collection.
