Description

A fine roman nicolo intaglio. Allegorical emblema.
2nd century A.D.
10 x 12 x 3 mm

The scene depicts a theatrical mask facing left and leaning on an altar. At its right, a thyrsus, and at its left a scorpio and a globe. On top, a star. The mask is characterized by an opened mouth, probably referred to greek tragedy. The altar is decorated with a patera (votive meaning). The globe, the star and the insect are an astrological allegory of the scorpio constellation. The thyrsus is referrable to the dionysiac sphere and to theatrical representations. The intaglio is well composed and finely engraved. Slight wear marks.
