Description

A lot of 4 renaissance sapphire intaglios. The 4 evangelists.

These intaglios depicting the symbolic representations of: The angel for Mattew; the bull for Luke; the lion for Mark; and the eagle for John. Each wear the nimbus and wings following the biblical sources first in Ezekiel 1–2, and in Revelation. This very rare and finely engraved set of four stones was probably mounted in a gold cross or on a metal casket. Each stone is characterized by a deep blue color with transparent shades. Mirror polished. The preciousness of this set is not only about the quality of the style but the presence of the four complete symbols of the 4 evangelists. The style is inspired by the post-renaissance classical revival. The anatomical details demonstrate the high execution of the engraver despite the sapphire hardness. Provenance : U.K, private collection, 80's.
