Provenance: acquired before 1975.

Carel Lodewijk Dake Jr was born in Schaerbeek, Belgium in 1886. He arrived in Indonesia in 1912. In the next years he travelled in the archipelago and to many other South-east Asian countries. The main subject of his paintings is the Indonesian landscape, and in particular the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat. In 1915 he created the Indonesian diorama for the World Fair in San Francisco, USA.
