A GREEN-GLAZED URN AND COVER
China, Northern Song dynasty
Circular section, the waisted body moulded with a series of horizontal lobes each of them with applied cones, the cover with rounded base, short cylindrical neck and a conical finial, the exterior covered with a green glaze.

An unglazed jar with a similar shape from Sichuan province is in the Freer Gallery in Washington (inv. n. RLS1997.48.1710a-b); see also the example (without cover) in the Museum Pusat in Jakarta (A. Ridho, The World’s Great Collections. Oriental Ceramics. Vol. 3. Museum Pusat, Jakarta, Tokyo-New York- San Francisco 1982, n. 70: the author dates the vase to late Tang-early Five Dynasties, for comparison with an excavated example in Changsha, Hunan province).
