Description

KIYOMIZU ROKUBEI V AND KAMISAKA SEKKA
(1875-1959/ 1866-1942)

Painted and glazed ceramic tea bowl

6,8 x 9,3 cm

Provenance: Italian private collection.

This tea bowl is a collaborative work between the ceramist Kiyomizu Rokubei V and the painter Kamisaka Sekka who decorated the exterior with vibrant autumn grasses.
Sekka was one of the protagonists of Japanese art in the traumatic historical transition between the end of feudalism and the beginning of the modernization of the country. A convinced admirer of traditional aesthetics, he preferred not to be influenced by novelties from the West, as happened at the same time to many other artists, producing works that exude ancient techniques and styles, in particular the ways of the Rinpa School that flourished between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
