Icon of the Virgin "Madre della Consolazione" - Veneto-Cretan 16th-17th Century; ; Mother of God shown half-length, looking at the beholder, supporting Christ, the later seated in an upright manner on his Mother's left forearm, blessing and holding a globe, the Virgin wearing a maroon maphorion with a white veil underneath, the tips of the folds highlighted with gold brushstrokes, her robe similar to Christ's brighter garments, all decorated with chrysography, against a gold background, set in an antique wooden, carved and gilded frame. Dimensions 66 x 47 x 4 cm, frame 87.5 x 69.5 cm. Item condition grading: **** good (minor restorations). Accompanied by a certificate of characterisation and spectroscopic dating of the wood from the laboratory of the Museo d'Arte e Scienza of Milan and with a scientific report from Ce.S.Ar. Centro Studi Archeometrici of Rome for the characterisation of the pigments and verification of the state of preservation of the work.
