MAMMOTH FEMUR

Well preserved fossil femur of a wooly mammoth. Mammoth are iconic animals symbol of the climate change extinction and the Ice Age. They lived from the Pliocene epoch (from around 5 million years ago) into the Holocene at about 4,000 years ago, and various species existed in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. They were members of the family Elephantidae, which also contains the two genera of modern elephants and their ancestors. The word mammoth was first used in Europe during the early 17th Century, when referring to “maimanto” tusks discovered in Siberia. “Maimanto” was the name given to huge animal tusks discovered in Siberia in the 17th Century.
