HAROW DESIGN STUDIO: SPUTNIK CHAIR
Paris, France
2017
64 x 58 x 75 cm
Contemporary design chair inspired by Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Sputnik 1, from the Russian Спутник meaning "travel companion", was the very first artificial Earth satellite of the homonym Soviet space program started in the late Fifties. Its launch was announced by Radio Moscow during the night of 4 to 5 October 1957 and represented the first step of Russian supremacy in the space exploration. The success of the mission had an incredible media impact, surprising as much the public as the experts from all over the world above all by virtue of the technical difficulties that prevented any hope of success on the part of the Soviet Union, who were believed to be far behind the United States in the technological stakes. During the cold war years, the level of scientific development was in fact the measure of the power of the two countries. A 58 cm diameter metal sphere began a frantic race for the conquest of space era. Fifty years after the memorable event, the Parisian design studio Harow proposed this futuristic chair characterized by four asymmetrical legs, similar to the antennas of the original space device. A steel and aluminium structure, the Sputnik chair theoretically insists on the simplicity of its conception, materials, and inspiration. The sources for the ideation and construction of this avant-garde object were the Soviet archives of OKB-1, an experimental design bureau in which a group of engineers worked on prototyping of advanced technology, to which the study Harow drew to create a precise reincarnation as a seat and functional chair, meticulously respecting the dimensions of the space satellite. Despite the apparent elementary design of the seat, it is not less complex than the one of its spatial homonym: the different melting points of the composite materials required a very special approach from a technical and chemical point of view guaranteeing a faithful reproduction of the shapes and an immaculate appearance of the pieces. Solidity, durability and fidelity of the chair’s aspect are the distinctive features thanks to which this futuristic seat was awarded with the Silver A' Design Award from the A' Design Award & Competition and has been shortlisted for The Chair category in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2017.
