THE FALL OF THE GIANTS


The engraving derives from a subject of Ovid's Metamorphoses which refers to the fresco by Giulio Romano in Palazzo Te in Mantua. Jupiter fulminates the Giants who challenged him. In the lower part, in a rectangular space, the dedication to the friend Orazio Quaranta and the inscription "Tolluntur in altum / Ut lapsu serioore ruant / Salvator Rosa Inv. Pinx. Scul." The text of inscription derives from Claudian (In Rufinum, I, 22-23) and refers to the inconstancy of Fortune.
