It was a Swiss born American soprano who had an active international career in operas and concerts from the 50s to 80s. A talented soprano pushed, has been widely acclaimed for her interpretation of the role of the title in Aida by Giuseppe Verdi; a role he has performed in many of the best theaters in the world operates. It was in particular the first black artist to play the role of Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1958. While performed a wide repertoire, was particularly admired for her interpretations of twentieth century music, including works by Richard Strauss, Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith. In 1959 he married a Swiss stockbroker Herman Penningsfield; then he left New York to live in Geneva, Switzerland.
