Margherita Carosio (Genova 1908 - ivi 2005)

In 1924, at age 16, he debuted in the work in Novi Ligure as the star of Lucia di Lammermoor. In 1928, at age 19, thanks to the recommendation of the Irish soprano Margaret Sheridan, was Musetta in La bohème and Feodor in Boris Godunov at the Royal Opera House in London, where he returned only after the end of World War II. It quickly became famous in Italy, performing in all the major theaters in coloratura soprano roles: Amina, Norina, Konstanze, Oscar, a role with which debuted at La Scala in 1929. At La Scala she performed successfully in different roles, but the his forte was Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. He played also most unusual parts such as Zerlina in Fra Diavolo, the Shemakhan queen in The Golden Cockerel, Volkhova in Sadko, the title role in Stravinsky's Le Rossignol, Aminta in Italian premiere of The Silent Woman, Egloge in Nero Mascagni. Later in his career he took the risk more driven opera roles, including Mimi and Violetta. In 1946, on tour with the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, he returned to London interpreting La Traviata and L'elisir d'amore, and also performed at La Scala, and recorded for EMI. In 1949, again at La Scala, he was the star of La bohème conducted by Victor de Sabata (of which there is a narrow live selection) and in 1954 played the main part in Amelia al Ballo, who then recorded to disk. Since the 30s he also began a small film career in music or films where music was a main component. These Queen of scale (1936) Camillo Mastrocinque, Angels on Earth (1942), where she played the part of soprano Adelina Patti, L'elisir d'amore (1947) by Mario Costa. He also worked as a musician in the drama of George Walter Chili Repudiated (1954). He retired from the stage in 1959 and in the four decades that followed the world so dear to her as a journalist and music critic. He died in his Genoa at the age of 96 years.
