The mystic marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Oil on canvas, 88 x 72 cm
The work is attributed to Benedetto Gennari, a pupil of the Italian painter Guercino. There are many reports about his life and his artistic career. After master's death he inherited one of the most important workshops.
The scene depicts the Madonna and Child with St. Catherine, the latter characterized by iconographic elements attributed to her, such as the preciousness of the garments and jewelry indicating her princely status. Jesus, in the arms of his mother, is holding the wedding ring.
