PIETRO MASCAGNI
Livorno 1863 – Roma 1945

Mascagni Hirsch (60 letters)

Sixty signed autograph letters, some very long, an intimate correspondence between the well-known composer from Livorno and Giuseppe Hirsch. Mascagni in the years of the letters (1882 - 1925) was already a renowned composer and conductor, especially for his most famous work the Cavalleria Rusticana, in fact with Cavalleria in 1890 he made his debut at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, to great public success while also being awarded a prize by publisher Sonzogno. The success, at that point, was repeated in every theater in which it was then performed. From 1899 his tours as a conductor took him to Saint Petersburg, Vienna and the United States. He then went to Vienna at the invitation of Gustav Mahler, where, at the Imperial Theater, he directed Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem, to commemorate the recent death of the Emilian composer. Joseph Hirsch here called "Peppo" was a well-known Roman impresario. This Roman friendship, that stands out in the letters, was also shared by Giacomo Puccini. Thus the correspondence reveals intimate aspects of the composer's life, revealed precisely to a true and faithful friend. The formats are in-4 and in-8.
