Description

FILIPPO LAURI
(Rome, 1623 – 1694)

Landscape with St. Jerome
Oil on canvas, 30 x 150 cm
This landscape depicts St. Jerome, sitting in a pleasant and romantic landscape and translating the Bible into latin.
The painting realized in the second half of the seventeenth century is a work composed by two artists, as it is typical in the seventeenth century.
The author of the painting is probably Filippo Lauri, Balthasar Lauwers’ son, a Flemish landscape painter. He studied before with his father and later with his brother Francis. Thanks to his activity as “figurista”, Lauri collaborated with many different painters, from landscapers to specialists of architectural perspectives and still lifes. He painted with Claude Lorrain, Gaspard Dughet, Jan Frans van Bloemen the Horizon, as well as with Viviano Codazzi with whom he began a long association, following the death of Michelangelo Cerquozzi.
However, the landscape is affected by Salvator Rosa’s manner, one out of the greatest masters.
