MARIA CALLAS
New York 1923 - Parigi 1977

Lot comprising over a hundred photographs and twenty unpublished negatives of the famous soprano, both in stage costume and in unusual everyday life situations. On returning to Greece, Maria was admitted to the Athens Conservatory where she graduated in singing, piano and languages, studying with the Italian soprano Maria Trivella, perhaps the first to discover her talent, but without exploiting those deep notes that would have become typical of her performances. In the early stages of her Italian career Maria was often directed by Maestro Serafin, and was restricted to a repertoire based on Wagnerian roles. The turning point of her career happened completely by chance: in 1949 she was convinced at the very last moment to replace the soprano Margherita Carosio, who had fallen sick, in the role of Elvira in "I puritani". It was a memorable success that kick-started her famous career.
