Japan, Meiji period

The deity standing on the back of a toad, in the right hand at the height of the womb a writing scroll, the right one towards the shoulder holding up another toad, dressed in a wide dress that leaves the chest uncovered, the face with an ironic expression accentuated by the tongue out, signed Muneharu on an red inlaid cartouche to the centre of the base.

Provenance: Italian private collection.
Gama Sennin (in Chinese Liu Hai) is an immortal of the Daoist tradition lived in China in the 10th century. His faithful companion is the three-legged toad, symbol of the moon.
