An English Victorian sterling silver chatelaine - London 1892-1893, William Hutton & Sons Ltd

A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. This chateleine is mounted with a mirror, a match holder/striker, a sovereign holder, a fob medal and a shotgun place finder vesta case.
The chatelaine is fully hallmarked for London 1892-1893, silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd; the a mirror is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1904-1905, silversmith Henry Matthews; the match holder is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1910-1911, silversmiths Smith & Bartlam; the sovereign holder is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1914-1915, silversmith F H Adams Ltd; the fob medal is stamped solid silver and the unmarked shotgun place finder vesta case is engraved E.B.C. XMAS.1909 and contains 8 numbered ivory pegs. The Shotgun place finder is a device used to choose the first shooting position in a game shoot; the most common shape is similar to a Vesta case containing until 10 numbered ivory pegs, but examples are known in the shape of a cartridge or a flask containing numbered balls. Any numbered peg is randomly inserted in the sheath and each shooter takes his turn to draw a peg revealing the number of the shooting position (butt) to use for the first drive. Complete with an unmarked solid silver chain. Total weight 162 gr. Item condition grading: **** good.
