Description

A LARGE CARPET
China, Qing dynasty, late 19th century

In the center a standing figure with a tiger, the scene enclosed by a frieze of Greek meander, in turn framed by bands of stylized vegetal motifs.

330 x 252 cm

Provenance: Italian private collection, formerly owned by John Fleming (1919-2001) and Hugh Honor (1927-2016).

The lohan are disciples of the original Buddha who through various stages of meditation have finally attained enlightenment. According to the tradition, their number can vary from a minimum of sixteen to a maximum of several dozens.
The lohan depicted on this carpet could be Pindola, an Indian monk who chose to not kill any living being. Legend has it that he was able to convert even a tiger to vegetarianism, which has since become his faithful companion.
