Description

A LARGE GLAZED PORCELAIN 'MOON JAR'

Korea, Joseon dynasty, 18th-19th century

38 cm high

Provenance: ambassador Francesco Rausi.

The so-called 'moon jar' is the artifact that best expresses the refined Korean aesthetic from the 18th century. Made in the official kilns of Geumsa-ri, Gwangju in the province of Gyeonju, they are very complicated objects to assemble and are usually modeled in two separate halves and then joined. The ideal proportions are those in which the measurement of the height corresponds to that of the diameter, but the cases in which complete equivalence is reached are very rare.
