A PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ DECORATED PORCELAIN VASES


Japan, Meiji period


The two vases wit circular section, ring base, ovoid body, cylindrical neck and expanded mouth, on the sides of the neck two handles shaped as a chrysanthemums, the decoration on the body - made with the cloisonné technique - depicting butterflies flying amidst grasses, towards the base and on the shoulder bands with geometric and floral motifs, on the neck a decoration of coin (shippō), inscribed 大日本制造/ 七寳會社/ 工人/ 竹内忠兵衛 (Dai Nihon seizō/ Shippō Gaisha/ kōjin/ Takeuchi Chūbei, "Made by Takeuchi Chūbei for the Shippō Gaisha Company of Greater Japan")

38,5 cm high each

Provenance: Italian private collection.

Active in Nagoya, Takeuchi Chūbei successfully experimented with the innovative technique of decorating porcelain with enamels applied in a manner similar to cloisonné on metal. His production is limited to a short period of the nineteenth century, around 1865-1875.
