Description

Broad-brimmed dish, defluent wall, large cavetto and hollowed rest.
FAENZA; late 15th century.Polychrome painted majolica. Front: wavy blue line around circumference with large illumination-style decorated band on three registers in duotone yellow beneath; inner circumference similar to that on the rim; in the cavetto Visconti coat-of-arms. Back: "a calza" blue and brown.
Ø 26 cm.; h. 3 cm.; Ø rest 8 cm.
Condition: good; some glueing.
Provenance: Rimini, Cleto Cucci Collection.
Dish manufactured in Faenza in the 15th century, with a decorative pattern of rare beauty. The coat-of-arms belongs to the House of Visconti, Dukes of Milan, here shown in a simplified version without the boy emerging from the mouth of the serpent. A Visconti commission in Faenza should come as no surprise inasmuch as the Visconti were a frequent and major presence in Romagna, a region which they eyed unceasingly with a view to expanding their dominions.
