Description

Large Two-Handle Vase
DERUTA, first half 16th century.Blu-painted and gold-plated majolica, with two intertwined hands under a crown as its dominant decorative motif
Height 24.5 cm, Øb. 11.5 cm, Øp. 11.5 cmItem condition grading: excellentThe theme of the intertwined hands does clearly identify this rare and beautiful majolica as a gamelion, the wedding gift from a fiancé to his betrothed. The overlying crown stands as a symbol of the fact that both parties are marrying into wealth – rich families being, of course, the only class of customers able to afford an item from the finest artistic production in first half 16th-century Deruta.
