Description

SALVATOR ROSA
(Naples, 1615–Rome, 1673)

Miraculous fishing

Oil on canvas, 75.5 x 131.5 cm
The painting is in the style of Salvator Rosa, a painter famous for his fame as a romantic and rebellious artist, active between Naples, Florence and Rome: the threatening rocky wall, the impetuous sea, the bringing-storm clouds, give the whole combination a sublime gradation which is fully part of the production of landscapes and marines by the Parthenopean artist.
In this work of remarkable scenic impact the attention is focused on the relationship between man and nature, in an almost preromantic key: the group of fishermen wishing to fight the waves are almost overlooked by the stormy sea, which strikes strongly on the rock.
The painter linked his reputation especially to the representation of wild and rugged landscapes, to battle scenes, characterized by a crude expressiveness and a preference for dark shades and luminous contrasts.

Thanks to prof. Riccardo Lattuada approaching the painting to the hand of Salvator Rosa, behind a photo-based view.
