The artwork is brought to the hand of Scipione Vannutelli, an artist from a noble Roman family. He was a student of Tommaso Minardi but also studied abroad in several cities such as Paris, Vienna, Spain and the Netherlands.
His artworks show an academic style and remind the painting of the Nazarenes, that group of artists who dissociate themselves from the rules of classicalism, aiming for an innovative art characterized by an archaic style and which took inspiration from the masters of the Italian fifteenth-century painting such as Filippo Lippi, Blessed Angelico, Luca Signorelli.
Vannutelli is known mainly for his historical paintings, genre scenes, and portraits which were vey successful such as the funeral of Giulietta (1888, Rome, National Gallery of Modern Art), Maria Stuarda al Capestro (Florence, Galleria d ' Modern Art).
