Description

Very fine and attractive roman carnelian intaglio (intense red). Standing warrior. The figure, portrayed in profile, turned to the left and inspired by the heroic iconogrphies, is holding a sword with scabbard and band in his right hand, while holding a downwards spear in the left;a shield, decorated with crossed motifs is at his feet. The rocks behind his shoulders have been finely sculpted, using also globular elements. Specific care was devoted to the muscular rendering, the which proves to be light but mighty at the same time. The piece presents an impressive internal mirror finish polishing, some very light abrasions due to time-related wear and a little chipping close to the rocks. The intaglio can be placed between the 1st century B.C and the 1st century A.D.; 14,3x11,2x3,2 mm;
