Description

EDWARD ELGAR
Broadheath 1857 - Worcester 1934

Two autograph letters signed on a postcard written in Italian, (Elgar loved Italian art and spending extended periods in Italy and was certainly familiar with our language) addressed to "All'Illustre Signor" Guido m. Gatti and which confirmed his having sent a portrait of Edward Elgar painted by Sir William Rothenstein in 1919: “… in accordo del suo desiderio ho spedito per posta il mio ritratto del Rothenstein …”. Many of his major orchestral works, including the Pomp and Circumstance march and the Enigma Variations, were very well received. He also composed oratorios, chamber music, symphonies, choir music and instrumental concerts. He was appointed "Royal Master of Music" by the English crown in 1924. Postcard format.
