A rare roman amethyst cameo. Frontal head of Medusa.
diam. 12,5 x 7 mm
The roundish face is frontal, surrounded by thick hair; at the top of the head rest the wings, on the neck a knot. Executed with skill, inspired by late Hellenistic models. Subject of apotropaic and protective value. Attractive stone color. Ring-shaped bezel. Slight wear signs. Rare typology. For comparisons: M. Henig, The Content Cameos, pp. 88-92; M. Henig, H.
