A BATAK WATER BUFFALO HORN, WOOD AND HAIR CONTAINER FOR MAGICAL SUBSTANCES, NAGA MORSARANG

The outer surface carved and incised with curving foliate design, a lizard (probably the earth deity Boraspati Ni Tano) and a long naga snake, the stopper depicting a mythical singa with two human figures sitted on its back

Provenance: Acquired before 1975.

Containers like this were used in Batak culture, North Sumatra, by the ritual specialist datu to hold mixtures and potions. The name naga morsarang derives from Naga Padoha, the serpent deity of the underworld, which is strictly associated with singa, a composite mythical creature that combines aspects of the water buffalo, the horse and the naga serpent-dragon (see F.H. Capistrano-Baker,Art of Island Southeast Asia: The Fred and Rita Richman Collection in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 1994, pp. 44-45, n. 19, for a naga morsarang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).
