German School of the Early 16th Century


UNIVERSAL JUDGMENT


German engraving of the early sixteenth century, recalls the Last Judgment of Hartmann Shedel's Liber Chronicarum but differs from it for various details. Christ in the center, with a lily and sword, sitting on a rainbow and with his feet resting on another rainbow, above and below three angels with the instruments of the passion, next to the apostles and kneeling the Madonna and John the Baptist, in bottom left St. Peter leads the saved souls to Heaven, on the right hell swallows the damned souls. Inscription along the bottom edge.
Colored woodcut, 380x270mm
Spectacular coeval proof, on watermarked paper, with coeval coloring. Excellent state of conservation.
