Description

Allegory of the transience of life and human works. Two men among ancient ruins and sepulchral vessels covered by a destructive ivy which, together with the putto with the upturned torch and the one who invites silence, alludes to death. Even weapons, musical instruments and the book on the ground mean that all human actions are reduced to dust by the action of time. At the bottom left the signature and the date. The composition has a horizontal development and takes place with the serenity of a classical frieze, it seems inspired by the canons dictated by Poussin at the time.
(see Paolo Bellini, The engraved work of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Milan, Municipality of Milan Culture and Entertainment Division, 1982, pp. 167-168 n. 63).
