Italo Tajo (Pinerolo 1915 - Cincinnati 1993)

He studied violin and singing in Turin with Nilde stichs-Bertozzi and in 1935 he made his debut in the same city as Fafner in The Rhine Gold. In 1939 he participated in the Italian first Wozzeck at the Opera Theater of Rome, in 1940 he made his debut at La Scala (where It appears regularly until 1956) and in 1942 in Florence as Leporello. After the war ended his career developed rapidly at the international level, with debuts in London, Paris, Buenos Aires. In 1946 he debuted in the US at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and in 1948 he made his debut at the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan (Don Basilio), iniziandovi regular activities mainly in roles semi-serious and funny, like Figaro, Leporello, Dulcamara, Don Pasquale, Gianni Schicchi . Although best remembered for the comic repertoire, also he faced several dramatic roles like Verdi's Attila and Tour, and Boris. He also distinguished himself in the modern repertoire "creating" the role of the Samuel David Darius Milhaud and interpreting works by Luciano Berio, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Adriano Lualdi and Luigi Nono. He participated in the First Italian War and Peace by Prokofiev in 1953 in Florence. It was also active in musicals, noting in 1957 Ezio Pinza in South Pacific, followed by Kiss Me, Kate. He participated in several films in the forties-opera (Lucia di Lammermoor, The Elixir of Love, The Barber of Seville) and in the eighties video of Tosca as sacristan by the Metropolitan and La bohème as Benoit from the San Francisco Opera. In 1966 he started as a lecturer at the University of Cincinnati, continuing to perform up to more than seventy years in roles of character (Geronte in Manon Lescaut, the aforementioned Benoit La bohème and Sacristan in Tosca), frequently to the theater Metropolitan, where he made the last appearance in 1991.
