Original drawing (cm 21,5,14 - ink on paper) depicting one of the projects for the tomb of the Pope, the last Sovereign Pope, to be erected in San Lorenzo, outside the walls of Rome. Gaps in the upper margins In 1878 a special commission was established for the Opera del Sepolcro of Pius IX chaired by Giovanni Acquaderni and Giovan Battista De Rossi, although in his will Pius IX had given specific instructions for his burial: “… Il mio corpo divenuto cadavere sarà sepolto nella Chiesa di S. Lorenzo fuori le mura, e precisamente sotto il piccolo arco esistente contro la così detta graticola, ossia pietra nella quale si designano anche adesso le macchie prodotte dal martirio dell’illustre Levita (SanLorenzo). La spesa del monumento non deve eccedere quattrocento scudi. Fuori del modesto monumento si vedrà scolpito un triregno con le chiavi: poi una epigrafe concepita nei termini seguenti: – Ossa et cineres Pii P.IX Sum: Pont: vixit ann: … in Pontificatu an: … Orate pro eo – Lo stemma gentilizio sarà un teschio di morte.”.
